Sunday Sermon 17/11/2024

Scripture:

• Deuteronomy 2:3 ERV: “You have traveled around this mountain long enough. Turn north.”
• Deuteronomy 2:7: “The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the Lord your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.”
• Isaiah 43:19: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”

Introduction: Stuck in the Wilderness

Sometimes life feels like a treadmill—we’re moving but not going anywhere. The struggles, fears, and setbacks can feel overwhelming, yet God has a plan for us that leads to renewal and hope. Deuteronomy 2:3 reminds us that God doesn’t want us stuck in stagnation. He is calling us to step into a new season, trusting that His plans are good and His guidance is perfect. Be encouraged: the wilderness isn’t your final destination! With faith, you can break free from the cycle of doubt and fear, embracing the new beginnings God is preparing for you.

Encouragement: You don’t have to stay in the wilderness forever. God is calling you to something new, something better. Trust His voice, take the first step, and watch how He transforms your path.

Part 1: The Wilderness Experience

The Israelites’ Journey

The Israelites’ journey teaches us that God is patient, even when we stumble. Like them, you might feel like your journey is delayed by fear, disobedience, or doubt. But take heart—God’s promises remain steadfast. His love is unwavering, and He is always ready to guide us when we turn back to Him. No matter how long you’ve been wandering, God’s faithfulness ensures you will reach the place He has prepared. Just as the Israelites eventually reached the Promised Land, so can you! Trust that God sees your struggles, and He is equipping you for the blessings ahead.

Testimony: Jason, a young man who struggled with addiction for years, felt he had wasted his life. After surrendering to Christ, he found healing and purpose. Today, he works as a counselor, helping others overcome the same struggles. Jason’s story reminds us that God’s grace is greater than our failures.

Encouragement: No matter how long you’ve been stuck, God’s plans for you remain. He can turn your wilderness into a testimony of His faithfulness.

Our Wilderness Seasons

• Life Circumstances:
  Even in life’s most challenging seasons, God is working behind the scenes to align circumstances for your good. When doors close, others will open. Trust that God’s plan is perfect, and His timing is never late. Every setback is an opportunity to lean on His wisdom and grow stronger in faith. Don’t lose hope; your wilderness season will pass, and God will guide you to a place of renewal and purpose.

Testimony: Michelle, a teacher, lost her job during a school closure. She spent months searching for direction, feeling lost and uncertain. But during that time, God led her to volunteer at a literacy program. Eventually, she was hired as its director, transforming the lives of countless children.

Encouragement: Even in uncertainty, God is working behind the scenes. Trust Him to use your wilderness for His glory.

• Spiritual Stagnation:
  When your spiritual life feels dry, know that God is always near, inviting you to draw closer. Rekindle your relationship with Him through prayer, worship, and time in His Word. Even small steps can reignite your faith and restore your joy. God doesn’t require perfection—He simply desires your heart. Trust that He will refresh your spirit and lead you into a deeper, more fulfilling connection with Him.

Testimony: David, a long-time believer, realized he was going through the motions of faith without truly connecting with God. After committing to consistent prayer and Bible study, his passion for Christ reignited. He now leads a men’s ministry, encouraging others to stay spiritually vibrant.

Encouragement: God is always near, ready to refresh your spirit. Seek Him, and He will renew your strength and joy.

• Fear and Disobedience:
  Fear is a powerful force, but God’s love is stronger. When fear holds you back, remember that God has not given you a spirit of fear but of power, love, and sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Trust that He will equip you for whatever He calls you to do. Stepping out in faith may be daunting, but the rewards of obedience far outweigh the risks. God will honor your courage and lead you to victory.

             Testimony: Maria, a missionary, was hesitant to serve in a dangerous region due to safety concerns. After much prayer, she said yes to God’s call. Despite the risks, her ministry has seen incredible fruit, with many people coming to Christ.

Encouragement: Don’t let fear rob you of God’s blessings. Step out in faith, knowing He will equip and protect you.

Part 2: Recognizing God’s Call to Move

The Command to “Turn North”

When God says, “Turn north,” it’s a call to stop looking back and start moving forward. He sees your potential and desires to lead you into greater blessings. This command is also an invitation to trust Him more deeply. Be encouraged: God’s plans for you are good, and He is working all things together for your benefit (Romans 8:28). Even if you don’t see the full picture, trust the One who holds your future. Your “north” may look uncertain, but God’s guidance ensures you’re on the path to promise and purpose.

Testimony: A struggling artist named Ben felt God calling him to use his gifts for ministry. Despite doubts, he began painting biblical themes. Today, his work inspires thousands and is displayed in churches worldwide.

Encouragement: God’s call may feel daunting, but His plans for you are greater than you can imagine. Trust His direction and take the next step.

A Call to Change Direction

• Leave Comfort Zones:
  God’s greatest work often begins outside our comfort zones. Leaving what’s familiar can feel overwhelming, but trust that God will sustain you. He has gone before you, preparing the way. As you step out in faith, you’ll discover strength, courage, and resources you didn’t know you had. Embrace the adventure of trusting God and watch Him work through your obedience.

Testimony: Jessica, a nurse, felt led to serve in a rural clinic overseas. Though it meant leaving her family, she followed God’s call and now serves a community that had no healthcare access.

Encouragement: When you leave your comfort zone for God, you’ll find His strength sustaining you and His joy filling you.

• Let Go of the Past:
  The past can hold us captive, but God calls us to freedom. Letting go of pain, regret, or resentment is a gift you give yourself. Trust that God can redeem every situation, using it for your growth and His glory. Release the weight of yesterday and step into the hope and healing of today.

Testimony: Andrew, who struggled with resentment after a business partner betrayed him, felt God calling him to forgive. Once he let go, God blessed him with a new partnership that exceeded his expectations.

Encouragement: Forgiveness and surrender open the door to healing and new opportunities. Trust God to redeem your story.

• Step Into Faith:
  Faith requires action. Even when the road ahead is unclear, trust that God’s promises are worth pursuing. Each step of obedience strengthens your relationship with Him. Remember, He is faithful to provide for every need along the way. As you step into faith, you’ll experience His peace and provision like never before.

Testimony: A church felt called to plant a new congregation in a neighbouring city. Despite financial challenges, they obeyed, and the new church is now thriving, transforming lives in the community.

Encouragement: When you take steps of faith, God meets you with provision and power. Trust Him to guide and sustain you.

Part 3: Overcoming Opposition

Facing Challenges

                    Challenges are inevitable when pursuing God’s purpose, but so is His help. Opposition often means you’re on the right path—one the enemy wants to block. But take courage: the God who calls you is the same God who fights for you. He will never leave you to face battles alone. Stay anchored in His Word and prayer, and trust that every challenge is an opportunity to witness His power and faithfulness.

Testimony: Sarah, a youth leader, faced criticism when she started a mentorship program for at-risk teens. But she persisted, and the program is now transforming lives, with several teens accepting Christ.

Encouragement: When challenges come, remember that God is fighting for you. Press on, knowing He will bring victory.

Lessons for Us

• Do Not Fear:
  Fear is natural, but faith is supernatural. When fear arises, remind yourself of God’s promises: He is your refuge, strength, and ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Lean on Him, and you’ll find the courage to face any obstacle.
• Trust God’s Guidance:
  God’s plans may not always make sense in the moment, but they are always perfect. When the way seems unclear, trust that He is leading you step by step. His guidance is unfailing, and His love for you ensures that every detour is part of His divine purpose.
• Stay Focused:
  The enemy will try to distract you with doubts, criticism, and setbacks, but stay focused on the calling God has placed on your life. Fix your eyes on Jesus, who is the author and finisher of your faith. In Him, you’ll find strength to press forward.

Part 4: God’s Faithfulness in the Wilderness

            Even in the wilderness, God’s faithfulness shines brightly. He is a provider, a guide, and a protector. When you feel lost or weary, look back and remember how far He has brought you. His provision is constant, and His promises never fail. Be encouraged: God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19). Trust Him to provide, and you’ll find His blessings are always more than enough.

Testimony: Rachel, a single mom, struggled financially after losing her job. Yet, through unexpected blessings—a church food drive, a surprise grant, and a supportive community—God met every need.

Encouragement: God’s faithfulness is unchanging. He sees your needs and will provide in ways you can’t imagine.

Part 5: Embracing the New Thing

              “Look, I am doing a new thing! Now it begins. Don’t you see it? I will make a road in the desert and rivers in the dry land.” Isaiah 43:19 God is doing a new thing, even when we can’t yet perceive it. Trust that He is working behind the scenes to prepare a brighter future for you. Embracing the new requires courage, faith, and surrender, but the rewards are worth it. Step boldly into what God has for you, knowing that His plans are for your good and His glory. With Him, every new beginning is filled with promise, hope, and endless possibilities.

Testimony: A retiree named James felt called to mentor young men at his church. Though it was a new challenge, he now leads a thriving mentorship program that has changed lives.

Encouragement: Embrace the new thing God is doing. Trust Him to use you for His glory and bless you in the process.

Conclusion

God’s call to “turn north” is an invitation to leave fear and stagnation behind, stepping into a season of purpose, faith, and abundance. No matter where you are in your journey,

God is with you—guiding, providing, and preparing the way. Trust Him, and you’ll discover the fullness of His promises.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your unchanging faithfulness. We surrender our fears, doubts, and struggles to You, trusting in Your perfect plan. Lead us as we “turn north,” stepping into the new things You have prepared for us. Strengthen our faith, provide for our needs, and fill our hearts with courage. Thank You for guiding us through every season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
