Sermon Title: Transformed by His Presence

Month of God’s Favor.

Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 8  and  1 Samuel 10

Date: May 24, 2026

Key Bible Verse: “The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.” 1 Samuel 10:6-7

Introduction

Praise the Lord,

Good morning, church family. It is a joy to gather with you on this final Sunday of May. Over the last few weeks, we have navigated life’s transitions, unexpected shifts, and moments where we felt completely ill-equipped for what lay ahead. Today, we are diving into a powerful truth found in the story of Israel’s transition to a monarchy in 1 Samuel. When the people demanded a king, it wasn’t God’s perfect initial design, yet we serve a God who is incredibly merciful. God graciously blesses this new plan. He chooses Saul, an ordinary young man looking for his father’s lost donkeys and elevates him to a position of leadership.

But God never calls you to a task without changing you to fit the assignment. When Saul is anointed, three remarkable things happen to him—promises that directly transfer to you and every single believer today through Jesus Christ. First, the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him in power. Second, he is deeply transformed into a new person. Third, he is given the ultimate reassurance: “Whatever job you’re given to do, do it. God is with you!”

You might have walked into this sanctuary today feeling completely down about your current circumstances. You might feel miles away from God, finding it incredibly hard to pray, or wrestling with heavy doubts about your future. Let this morning be a turning point. The same supernatural grace that met Saul is meeting you right now. You are not operating in your own strength, you are not defined by your past mistakes, and you are absolutely never walking alone. Let’s explore how God is working these three profound realities into your life today.

  1. The Divine Empowerment of the Holy Spirit

When God calls us into a new season, He does not rely on our natural talents, our speaking abilities, or our resumes. He relies on His presence. In 1 Samuel 10:6, Samuel tells Saul that the Spirit of the Lord will come upon him in power. This is the first essential shift: moving from human effort to divine empowerment. Saul was just a normal guy from the smallest clan of the smallest tribe of Israel. Left to himself, he had zero leadership capability to run a nation. But the moment the Holy Spirit came upon him, his natural limitations were instantly swallowed up by God’s unlimited authority and strength.

A beautiful Biblical example of this is Gideon in Judges 6. When the angel of the Lord found Gideon, he was hiding in a winepress, terrified of the invading Midianites. He viewed himself as the least in his family. But the Lord looked at him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel.” Later, the text tells us that the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, this once-fearful man blew a trumpet, gathered an army, and ultimately defeated a massive enemy host with just three hundred men. It wasn’t Gideon’s strategic military genius that won the battle; it was the raw power of the Holy Spirit working through a fragile, ordinary vessel.

This same power is available to you today. In the New Testament, Jesus promised that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us. You do not have to face your parenting, your stressful workplace, your financial strains, or your ministry goals in your own energy. When you feel weak, exhausted, and ready to quit, that is exactly where the Spirit of the Lord steps in to carry the heavy load. He gives you supernatural endurance, unexpected wisdom, and a bold confidence that does not make sense to the world around you. Step out of your own strength today and rely entirely on His power.

  1. Radical Transformation into a New Person

The second remarkable thing that happened to Saul was a total internal overhaul. Samuel told him that he would be transformed and become a new person. God didn’t just want to change Saul’s social status from a farmer to a king; He wanted to change his very heart. True divine calling always starts with internal transformation. When God touches your life, your old desires, your lingering fears, and your old ways of thinking begin to dissolve. You are no longer defined by who you used to be, by your family line, or by your worst mistakes.

We see this radical transformation clearly in the life of the Apostle Paul in Acts 9. Before his encounter with Christ, he was Saul of Tarsus—a zealous persecutor of the early church, breathing out murderous threats against Christians. But on the road to Damascus, a bright light knocked him down and the voice of Jesus transformed his heart. He went from a man who destroyed churches to the greatest missionary the world has ever known, writing most of the New Testament. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 famously declares, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” Paul became a totally new person.

This transformation is happening in you right now. You might look at your life and think, “I have too much baggage, too many bad habits, and too much hurt to ever change.” But God specializes in heart transplants. He takes away our stony, stubborn hearts and gives us tender hearts of flesh. Your past does not hold a monopoly over your future. Through Christ, you are actively being transformed into His image from glory to glory. Embrace this new identity. Stop identifying with your past failures and start walking in the beautiful, redeemed reality of who God says you are today.

  1. Absolute Assurance of God’s Abiding Presence

The third promise given to Saul is perhaps the most comforting words a weary soul can hear: “Whatever job you’re given to do, do it. God is with you!” Saul was about to step into a massive, stressful role, facing fierce geopolitical enemies like the Philistines and managing a highly fractious nation. Yet, the pressure was completely removed from his shoulders because the Creator of the universe promised to be his companion. When God is with you, the size of the obstacle in front of you ceases to matter. The pressure to perform vanishes when you realize the Battle belongs to the Lord.

Think about Moses in Exodus 3. When God called him from the burning bush to go to Egypt and demand the freedom of the Israelites, Moses was terrified. He repeatedly asked, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” He made excuses about his stuttering speech and his lack of authority. But God didn’t give Moses a massive lecture on self-confidence or leadership skills. God simply gave him one definitive answer: “I will be with you.” That single promise was enough to turn a fugitive shepherd into a bold leader who parted the Red Sea and stood down the most powerful empire on earth.

Church, whatever job, trial, or responsibility you are facing tomorrow morning, you can handle it because God is with you. You might be facing a difficult medical diagnosis, a strained marriage, a tough academic exam, or a major career pivot. Do not shrink back in fear. Do not let anxiety paralyze your steps. Whatever is placed before you, tackle it with a joyful and courageous heart. You are not walking through the dark valleys of life alone. The omnipresent God is walking right beside you, holding your hand, leveling your mountains, and clearing your path.

  1. Overcoming Doubts and Circumstantial Distance

The final reality we must address is the human tendency to feel disconnected from these promises. Saul, despite being anointed, later hid among the baggage when it came time to present him as king. He wrestled with deep insecurity. We often do the same. We look at our messy circumstances, our dry prayer lives, or our lingering theological doubts and conclude, “God must have abandoned me.” But the truth of God’s Word stands firm regardless of our shifting emotions. The Spirit of the Lord remains upon you, your transformation is still underway, and God is still with you even when you cannot feel Him.

Look at the prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 19. After a massive spiritual victory on Mount Carmel, he received a death threat from Queen Jezebel. Plunged into sudden fear and depression, Elijah ran for his life into the desert, sat under a broom bush, and prayed that he might die. He felt completely isolated, crying out, “I am the only one left.” Yet, God did not abandon him in his depression. God met him with a gentle whisper, fed him, reassured him that he was not alone, and gave him fresh direction. Elijah’s temporary emotional distance did not change God’s permanent commitment to him.

Your feelings are terrible barometers of spiritual truth. Just because you feel far from God today does not mean He has moved an inch. Even when it is hard to find the words to pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes for you with groans too deep for words. Your doubts do not scare God away; they invite His tender reassurance. No matter how deep the pit of your current circumstance feels, God’s grace is deeper still. Trust His unchanging character over your changing feelings and know that His work in your life cannot be derailed by a difficult season.

This Month Last Week Reflection

As we look back over the month of May, take a moment to review where you have invested your emotional energy. Many of us have spent this month worrying about things we cannot control, feeling unqualified for our tasks, or letting seasonal anxieties steal our peace. We have behaved like Saul hiding in the baggage, paralyzed by our own insecurities. But God is calling us out of hiding. This month reflection is a reminder that God has been quietly working behind the scenes of your life, orchestrating alignment and building spiritual muscle within you. Every challenge you faced this month was not meant to break you, but to position you to experience the reality of God’s empowering strength.

Deliverance Session

Right now, we break every spiritual chain holding you back. We command the spirits of fear, insecurity, depression, and anxiety to loose their grip on your life in Jesus’ name. If you have been bound by the words of your past, by ancestral patterns of failure, or by persistent spiritual dryness, we declare your total freedom today. The Spirit of the Lord is a breaking fire. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is absolute liberty. Receive deliverance from the heavy baggage of guilt, self-doubt, and shame. Stand up in your spiritual authority, dust off the heavy ash of the past, and walk forward into the glorious freedom that Christ has fully purchased for you.

Altar Call

If you are here today and you realize you have been trying to fight life’s battles completely in your own strength, or if you have never fully surrendered your heart to Jesus Christ, this moment is for you. The altar is open. You do not have to fix your life before you come to Him; you come to Him so He can transform you into a completely new person. Step out of the crowd and step into a fresh covenant with your Savior. If you want to experience the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit and the permanent, loving assurance of His presence, come forward now. God is waiting with open arms to welcome you home.

Challenging Session

Church, my challenge to you as you walk out of these doors today is to stop playing small and start living out your divine calling. Stop making excuses based on your limitations, your lack of resources, or your current anxieties. God did not call an idealized, perfect version of you; He called you, exactly as you are, because He intends to transform you along the way. When you face your challenges this week, do not back down. Walk into every room, every meeting, and every difficult conversation with your head held high, knowing that the Spirit of the Lord is upon you in power. Act boldly on the tasks set before you.

 Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your incredible grace and Your constant, loving presence in our lives. Lord, we lift up every person under the sound of my voice today, asking that You would pour out Your Holy Spirit upon them in a fresh, powerful wave. Father, wash away every lingering doubt, heal every hidden wound, and break every heavy chain of anxiety or fear that has kept Your people bound for too long. We pray that You would renew our minds and transform our hearts, helping us to see ourselves exactly the way You see us—as redeemed, capable, and deeply loved children of the Most High God.

Lord, as we step into this upcoming week and face our daily responsibilities, remind us continually that we never walk alone. Give us the supernatural confidence to tackle every single task before us, knowing with absolute certainty that You are walking right beside us, guiding our steps and fighting our battles. May Your peace, which passes all human understanding, guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Let our lives be a bright, shining reflection of Your goodness and love to everyone we meet, encouraging those who are weary and pointing them to Your hope. We commit our families, our health, our careers, and our futures entirely into Your hands, trusting that the best is yet to come. In the mighty and precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. God bless you abundantly.
