Drop the Heavy Rocks: Jesus Is Taking Your Invisible Backpack Away
Main Bible Verse:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
Month Theme: This is a month of unstoppable restoration and divine favor.
Date: 09 AUGUST 2026
Introduction
Welcome to the second Sunday of August! Today, August 9, 2026, marks another blessed step in our journey through this month of unstoppable restoration and divine favor.
Before I start today’s sermon, I want to thank every single one of you for acting on last week’s instruction. Last week, we challenged ourselves to reach out to one another with simple messages and calls asking, “How are you? How was your day?” One of our sisters shared with me how heart-touching that word was for her, and she told me how wonderful it was when someone called her asking, “How are you, sister? How is your family?” I was so moved and wondered at how powerful those simple messages and conversations can be!
Now, nowadays, we see another sad trend where people hesitate to send the first message. Many times, parents have to act as mediators—a father or mother has to ask someone, “Please send a message to my son,” or “Please check on my daughter.” We often wait for others to message us first, or we rely on mediators to connect us. But today, we want to pray and ask God for wisdom on how to send that first message ourselves, taking the initiative to reach out in love without waiting for anyone else!
Last week, I shared that our topic for today would be “Stepping into Your Open Doors of Abundance.” However, this past Thursday, August 6, I attended an online conference with a topic that deeply moved my heart: The invisible backpack: what are you carrying? God strongly encouraged me to bring this exact topic to you today instead! Even our mid-week service topic was so closely related, as we learned about loving one another even when we disagree.
Before you came into this room or started reading this message, you put on your clothes, tied your shoes, and brushed your hair. You made yourself look ready for the day. But spiritual eyes can see something that human eyes often miss: almost every single one of us walked in here wearing an invisible backpack. Imagine that every worry, every family problem, every financial debt, every guilt from the past, and every obligation you feel forced to handle is a heavy rock sitting inside that backpack.
Some of these rocks are small, like a minor daily headache or a short argument. Some of these rocks are massive and heavy, like chronic illness, severe heartbreak, or the fear of failure. But day after day, week after week, you keep carrying them. Your shoulders are aching, your legs are shaking, and your spirit feels completely exhausted. You smile on the outside so that people think you are strong, but on the inside, you are silently crying out, “I cannot carry this burden anymore!”
I have a sweet, comforting word for you from Jesus today: You do not have to carry it all! God never created your human back to carry the heavy weight of the world. Divine favor means Jesus is standing right beside you, reaching out His loving hands, and offering to take that heavy invisible backpack off your shoulders so He can give you rest and restoration.
Part 1: Identifying the Invisible Backpack – 25 Rocks We Carry
Every person you meet on the street or sit next to in church is carrying a backpack that you cannot see with your physical eyes. Inside this backpack are all the secret tears, unhealed hurts, and heavy responsibilities that accumulate over time. Because everyone else seems to be moving along fine, we force ourselves to pretend that our pack is light. But pretending does not make the weight go away; it only makes our soul weary and tired.
Let us look closely at 25 specific rocks that might be sitting inside your invisible backpack right now:
- Unpaid debts and financial instability
- Fear of losing a job or unemployment stress
- Chronic physical illness or body pain
- Mental exhaustion, anxiety, and panic
- Silent depression and inner loneliness
- Guilt over past sins and regret over bad decisions
- Unforgiveness and bitterness toward someone who hurt you
- Marital conflict, misunderstandings, and distance
- Worry over children’s safety, character, and future
- Grief from losing a loved one
- Fear of failure and not being good enough
- The heavy strain of pleasing everyone around you
- Rejection and feelings of unworthiness
- Slander, gossip, and unfair criticism from others
- Caring for sick or aging family members alone
- Broken promises and disappointed expectations
- Addiction or secret habits you cannot break
- Fear of the future and fear of growing old
- Legal troubles or difficult court cases
- Housing instability or rent pressure
- Painful memories from childhood trauma
- Academic or professional exam pressure
- Feeling trapped in a toxic work environment
- Spiritual dryness and feeling distant from God
- Carrying other people’s problems that are not yours to fix
Look at this list. How many of these 25 heavy rocks are sitting inside your backpack today? Identifying them is the first step toward throwing them into the hands of Jesus! Remember, as you look at these rocks, you are not alone in this struggle. Look around this room: every brother and sister beside you is fighting a silent battle too. Be kind to one another, encourage someone whose shoulders look heavy, and let us help each other find rest in Christ.
Part 2: Step 1 – Reflect on What You Are Carrying
To experience true restoration this month, you must first be honest with yourself and with God. Take a few silent minutes today to reflect and write down everything that is currently resting inside your invisible backpack. List the names of the problems that keep you awake at night. Write down the worries about your health, your job, your family, and your past mistakes. Name every single rock that is draining your energy. God already knows what is in your heart, but naming your burdens helps you realize just how much heavy weight you have been trying to manage all by yourself.
As you reflect today, do not judge yourself or feel ashamed of what is inside your bag. God is not looking at your list to condemn you; He is looking at your list with deep compassion and love. When you see your brothers and sisters taking this time to reflect, offer them a quiet prayer of encouragement. Let us support each other as we lay our honest hearts open before the Lord.
Part 3: Step 2 – Consider Which Rocks Are Yours
Once you look at the list of burdens in your invisible backpack, ask yourself this simple question: Which rocks are truly yours to carry, and which rocks have you been carrying just because you felt you had to? So many of us carry heavy rocks of guilt, trying to fix other people’s mistakes, or trying to satisfy everyone else’s expectations of us. You do not have to share your private list with anyone if you do not want to, but be honest with God. Jesus wants you to realize that many of those heavy rocks were put there by fear, people-pleasing, or the enemy.
It takes so much courage to admit that you have been carrying weight meant for someone else, or weight that only God is strong enough to handle. Encourage your family and friends today by letting them know that they do not have to be superheroes. Remind each other that it is okay to put down heavy expectations and stop trying to control every outcome. God’s grace gives you permission to lay down what was never yours to hold.
Part 4: Unstoppable Restoration Demands an Empty Backpack
You cannot receive the fresh, wonderful blessings God has prepared for you in August if your hands and back are completely full of heavy, dirty rocks. Divine favor wants to fill your heart with deep peace, unspeakable joy, and heavenly strength. But if your invisible backpack is completely stuffed with old worries and bitter hurts, there is no room left for God’s blessings to rest. Unstoppable restoration begins the exact moment you stop holding onto the heavy things of yesterday and open your hands to receive the fresh grace and goodness of today.
When you see a friend or church member clinging to past pain, encourage them with a warm hug or a kind word. Remind them, “God has something so much better for your future than what you lost in the past!” When we encourage others to empty their backpacks, we create an atmosphere of hope and healing where everyone can step into God’s unstoppable restoration together.
Part 5: Trading Your Heavy Yoke for His Light Burden
In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus makes us an incredible exchange offer. He does not ask us to work harder or carry our burdens better; He says, “Come to me… and I will give you rest.” When you give your invisible backpack to Jesus, He gives you His yoke in return. His yoke is light, gentle, and easy because He carries the heavy side for you! Trading your heavy rocks for Jesus’ peace means admitting, “Lord, I cannot handle this situation on my own, but I know You can.” When you give your problems to Jesus, He transforms your heaviness into a song of praise.
Share this sweet truth with someone who looks exhausted this week! Tell them, “You don’t have to carry this alone—Jesus is ready to carry it for you.” What a glorious gift it is to know that our Savior walks beside us, bearing the heaviest part of our load so that we can walk in freedom and joy!
Part 6: Walking Free in Divine Favor Every Day
Walking in divine favor means living every day with a light heart and an empty backpack. Whenever a new worry, fear, or heavy obligation tries to crawl back into your life this week, do not put it in your backpack. Immediately throw that rock into the hands of Jesus through short, faithful prayer. When people ask how you can remain so calm and cheerful despite your difficulties, you can tell them, “I used to carry a heavy backpack, but Jesus took it away!” You are a child of the King, and your daily walk should be filled with freedom, lightness, and victory.
Go out into the world and shine that freedom like a light to everyone around you! Your cheerful spirit, peace, and loving attitude will inspire others who are still struggling under heavy loads to seek Jesus for themselves. Be an encourager, a listening ear, and a beacon of hope wherever you step this week.
A Call to Action: Drop Your Rocks Today!
Now that you know Jesus wants to take your heavy burdens, what are you going to do? Will you leave this room still wearing that heavy, painful backpack, or will you choose to drop those rocks at the feet of Jesus right now? Faith requires a physical and spiritual decision. You must choose to stop picking up burdens that God never commanded you to bear.
I challenge you today to make a conscious choice to unload your pack. If you wrote down a list of your worries, hold that list up to God in faith. Take a deep breath, release your tight grip on those problems, and make a clean break from anxiety, fear, and overthinking. Stop trying to control everything and stop trying to fix everyone around you. Forgive those who dropped heavy rocks of pain onto your shoulders. Choose to trust that God is bigger than your bills, stronger than your sickness, and faithful to fix your broken family. Drop your rocks right now and step forward in freedom! Encourage the person next to you right now by saying, “It’s time to drop your rocks and let Jesus give you peace!”
Altar Call: Come to Jesus for Rest
If you are reading this today and you feel completely exhausted, broken, or far away from God, this invitation is specifically for you. You have been fighting life’s battles in your own limited strength for far too long, and your soul is worn out. Jesus is standing right here with open, loving arms, calling your name. You do not need to fix your life before you come to Him; come just as you are with all your heavy rocks, past sins, and hidden pain.
“Lord Jesus, I come to You today tired and heavy burdened. I cannot carry this invisible backpack any longer. I admit that I have sinned and tried to live life in my own strength. I believe You died for me on the cross and rose again to give me life. Forgive all my sins and wash me clean. I surrender my heavy burdens, my worries, and my whole heart into Your hands today. Be my Lord, my Savior, and my rest. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
If you prayed that prayer sincerely, your heavy burdens are gone, and your new life of divine rest starts right now! Welcome to the family of God! Turn to someone nearby and celebrate with them, because heaven is rejoicing over you today!
Deliverance Session: Breaking the Spirit of Heaviness
In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus, we break every evil chain of depression, anxiety, and heaviness resting on your shoulders today! According to the Word of God, we command every demonic spirit of fear, burnout, sorrow, and mental torment to pack its bags and leave your life forever right now by the fire of the Holy Spirit!
Whatever dark burden has kept you bowed down, sleepless, and hopeless in past seasons is completely shattered by the precious blood of Jesus. We remove every evil weight placed upon your health, your mind, your marriage, and your children. We speak divine freedom, supernatural peace, and heavenly light into your spirit. You are no longer a slave to fear or heavy burdens. You are delivered, set free, and wrapped in God’s garment of praise in Jesus’ name! Stand up in victory and declare over your brother and sister, “You are set free today by the power of Jesus!”
Conclusion
As we close today’s service, stand tall, lift up your head, and rejoice in the Lord! You walked into this place wearing a heavy invisible backpack, but you are walking out light, free, and completely refreshed by the Holy Spirit. Always remember that you do not have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders because your Heavenly Father is holding you in His strong, loving hands.
Throughout this second week of August, whenever a new worry or heavy thought tries to settle on your heart, remember Matthew 11:28. Remind yourself that this is your month of unstoppable restoration and divine favor. God is turning your sadness into joy, your fatigue into fresh strength, and your heavy burdens into a beautiful testimony. Walk out today with a big smile on your face, reach out to lift up someone else who is struggling, and know that the King of Kings is carrying you and fighting all your battles for you!

Let Your divine peace, which passes all human understanding, flood their minds, hearts, and homes right now. Touch their aching shoulders and heal their tired bodies. Restore the joy, peace, health, and strength that stress and worry have stolen from them in past years. Give us the wisdom, courage, and love to send the first message of encouragement and care to others this week. Let Your unstoppable favor surround them like a shield everywhere they go.
