Sermon: Don’t Compare Yourself with Others

Topic: Don’t Compare Yourself with Others — Don’t Look at social media
Theme: Finding your identity, peace, and purpose in God
Key Bible Verse: “Each one should test their own work. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” Galatians 6:4.

Date: Wednesday, 24 June 2026

Praise the Lord. Today, for our midweek service, we are going to meditate on a very important topic: Don’t compare yourself with others. Don’t look at social media and lose your peace.

We are living in a generation where comparison is very easy. Before, people compared themselves with their neighbours, friends, relatives, or people in their church. But today, through social media, people compare their life with the whole world. We see someone’s success, someone’s house, someone’s family, someone’s ministry, someone’s job, someone’s holiday, someone’s beauty, someone’s achievement, and suddenly we feel small. We begin to ask, “Why not me? Why is my life not like theirs? Why am I still waiting? Why am I struggling while they are celebrating?”

But we must understand something clearly: comparison steals joy, weakens faith, creates insecurity, and blinds us from seeing what God is doing in our own life.

Galatians 6:4 says, “Each one should test their own work. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.” This verse teaches us that God does not want us to live by comparison. God wants us to look at our own life, our own calling, our own obedience, and our own walk with Him.

God did not create you to be a copy of someone else. He created you with a unique purpose. Your journey is different. Your timing is different. Your calling is different. Your process is different. Your testimony is different. When we compare ourselves with others, we forget that God works differently in every person’s life.

  1. Comparison Makes Us Forget God’s Goodness

When we keep looking at others, we stop seeing the blessings in our own life. We may have many reasons to thank God, but comparison makes us blind to them.

Psalm 73 shows the heart of Asaph. He looked at the prosperity of others and became discouraged. He said:

“But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” Psalm 73:2-3

Asaph was a worshipper, but he nearly slipped because he started comparing. He looked at others and thought their life was better. He saw their success and wondered why he was struggling. This is exactly what happens to many believers today. They love God, they pray, they serve, but when they look too much at others, especially on social media, they become discouraged.

Social media often shows the highlight of someone’s life, not the full story. People post their victories, but not always their battles. They show their smiles, but not their tears. They show the blessing, but not always the waiting, pain, sacrifice, or struggle behind it. So, when we compare our real life with someone else’s edited life, we become unhappy for no reason.

Do not let a picture steal your peace. Do not let someone’s post make you doubt God’s love. Do not let another person’s blessing make you forget your own blessing. God has been good to you. God has carried you. God has protected you. God has answered prayers. God has opened doors. God has kept you alive. That is enough reason to praise Him.

  1. Comparison Creates Insecurity

When we compare, we begin to feel we are not enough. We feel our life is too small, our gift is too little, our ministry is not powerful, our family is not perfect, our job is not good, our progress is slow. But these thoughts are not from God.

The enemy uses comparison to attack your identity. He wants you to believe that you are behind, forgotten, rejected, or less valuable. But the Word of God says something different.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14

You are wonderfully made by God. Your value does not come from likes, comments, followers, position, salary, appearance, or public recognition. Your value comes from the fact that you belong to God. You are created in His image. You are loved by Him. You are chosen by Him. You are precious in His sight.

Sometimes we look at social media and think everyone else is doing better. But we must remember: God does not measure your life by online appearance. God looks at your heart, your faithfulness, your obedience, and your relationship with Him.

You may not be famous, but you can be faithful. You may not be seen by many, but you are seen by God. You may not have everything others have, but you have God’s presence. And God’s presence is greater than anything this world can offer.

  1. God Has Given You Your Own Race

The Bible says:

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”  Hebrews 12:1

This verse says “the race marked out for us.” That means each person has a race given by God. Your race is not my race. My race is not your race. Your calling, timing, and process are personally designed by God.

One of the biggest mistakes we make is trying to run someone else’s race. We compare our beginning with someone else’s middle. We compare our process with someone else’s harvest. We compare our private struggle with someone else’s public success.

But God is saying, “Run your race. Stay in your lane. Keep your eyes on Me.”

When Peter asked Jesus about John’s future, Jesus replied:

“If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” John 21:22

This is a powerful word. Jesus was telling Peter, “Do not worry about John’s journey. You follow Me.” This is what God is telling us today: “Do not worry about what I am doing in someone else’s life. You follow Me. Do not compare. Do not compete. Do not become jealous. Walk with Me.”

Your responsibility is not to copy others. Your responsibility is to obey God. When you follow Jesus faithfully, you will reach the place He has prepared for you.

  1. Social Media Can Distract Us from God’s Voice

Social media is not always bad. It can be used for good things. We can share the Gospel, encourage people, connect with others, and spread God’s Word. But if we are not careful, social media can become a place of distraction, comparison, jealousy, pride, and insecurity.

Many people begin their day by looking at their phone instead of looking to God. They hear the voice of people before they hear the voice of God. They fill their minds with posts, reels, opinions, and images, but their spirit becomes weak because they are not filled with the Word of God.

The Bible says:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”  Proverbs 4:23

We must guard our heart. Not everything we see is healthy for our soul. Not every post is good for our peace. Not every voice deserves access to our mind. If something constantly makes you feel jealous, discouraged, insecure, or spiritually dry, you need to step back.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is close the app, open the Bible, and sit in God’s presence.

Do not feed your insecurity. Feed your faith.
Do not scroll until your heart becomes heavy. Pray until your heart becomes peaceful.
Do not compare until you feel empty. Worship until you remember who you are in Christ.

  1. Be Thankful for What God Is Doing in Your Life

A thankful heart is the cure for comparison. When we begin to thank God, our eyes are opened to see His goodness.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”  1 Thessalonians 5:18

Thanksgiving changes our focus. Instead of saying, “Why do they have that?” we begin to say, “Lord, thank You for what You have given me.” Instead of saying, “Why am I not there yet?” we say, “Lord, thank You that You are still leading me.” Instead of saying, “My life is not enough,” we say, “Lord, Your grace is enough for me.”

When you are thankful, comparison loses its power.

Look at your life. You may not have everything you prayed for, but God has still been faithful. You may still be waiting for some doors to open, but God has already brought you through many doors. You may not be where you want to be, but you are not where you used to be. That itself is a testimony.

  1. Celebrate Others Without Losing Yourself

As believers, we are called to love one another, not compete with one another. When someone else is blessed, we do not need to feel threatened. Their blessing does not reduce our blessing. Their breakthrough does not cancel our breakthrough. Their open door does not mean your door will stay closed.

Romans 12:15 says:

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”

When others are blessed, we can celebrate with them. When others succeed, we can thank God for them. A mature believer can say, “Lord, thank You for blessing them. I know You are faithful in my life too.”

Jealousy says, “Why them?”
Faith says, “God, thank You for them, and I trust Your timing for me.”

God has enough grace for everyone. He has enough blessings for everyone. He has enough opportunities for everyone. You do not need to fight for someone else’s portion. What God has prepared for you will come at the right time.

  1. Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

The final answer to comparison is this: keep your eyes on Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 says:

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

When our eyes are on people, we become confused. When our eyes are on social media, we become distracted. When our eyes are on our problems, we become discouraged. But when our eyes are on Jesus, we receive peace, strength, direction, and confidence.

Jesus never called us to compare. He called us to follow. He never asked us to impress people. He asked us to obey the Father. He never told us to live for approval. He told us to live by faith.

Today, God is calling us back to a simple life of faith: walk with Him, trust Him, obey Him, and be thankful.

Do not compare your life with others. Do not let social media decide your worth. Do not allow someone’s highlight to make you hate your own journey. God is writing your story. And what God writes is always beautiful in His time.

Conclusion

Dear brothers and sisters, comparison is a trap. Social media can make it worse if we do not guard our hearts. But God wants to set us free. He wants us to live with peace, gratitude, and confidence in His plan.

Remember this truth: You are not behind. You are in God’s hands. You are not forgotten. You are being prepared. You are not less than others. You are uniquely created by God.

Run your race. Stay close to God. Be thankful. Celebrate others. Guard your heart. Keep your eyes on Jesus.

Your life does not need to look like someone else’s life to be blessed. God’s plan for you is enough.

As we close, let us make a decision tonight to stop measuring our lives through the eyes of people and start seeing ourselves through the eyes of God. The world may tell us to prove ourselves, promote ourselves, and compare ourselves, but Jesus calls us to rest in Him, trust Him, and follow Him faithfully. Your value is not decided by social media, success, appearance, or applause. Your value was already settled at the cross, where Jesus gave His life for you.

So, protect your peace. Guard your heart. Reduce anything that pulls you away from God’s presence. Spend more time in prayer, worship, and the Word of God. When your heart is full of Christ, comparison will lose its grip. Remember, God has not finished with you. Your story is still being written, your purpose is still unfolding, and your best days are still ahead in Jesus Christ.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for speaking to us today. Forgive us for the times we compared our lives with others and forgot Your goodness. Help us to guard our hearts, especially when we use social media. Remove jealousy, insecurity, discouragement, and fear from our hearts. Teach us to be thankful for what You are doing in our lives. Help us to run our own race with faith and patience. May our eyes be fixed on Jesus, not on people. We believe that Your plan, Your timing, and Your purpose for our lives are perfect. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

God bless abundantly.
